Ecosystems-Based Approach
According to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, the Ecosystems-Based Approach (EBA) is
“a strategy for the integrated management of land, water and living resources that promotes conservation and sustainable use in an equitable way.”
EBA recognizes the interdependence within an ecosystem, rather than considering single issues, species or functions in isolation. Human activity, culture and institutions are viewed as integral components of ecosystems.
Such approaches provide a holistic response to the impacts of climate change. They address the crucial links between climate change, biodiversity and sustainable resource management, in order to achieve both human and environmental well-being.
The overarching principle is to ensure that, despite changes in the ecosystem, the capacity of the ecosystems to produce food, employment, revenues and other essential services is maintained for the benefit of the present and future generations.
By addressing climate change from this perspective, we can contribute to the reduction of atmospheric greenhouse gases, as well as improve biodiversity conservation, livelihood sustenance and food security, water management and disaster risk reduction.
